INSPECTION CHALLENGE SOLVED BY NEW TECHNOLOGY

AIMING FOR NEW PARTNERSHIPS

A few days ago, a case study on the integrity inspection of critical defence equipment was organised and carried out. Atom Group, in collaboration with Novosound, implemented pioneering and innovative inspection solutions, that were previously considered impossible with the available technologies, in Greek assets and defence infrastructures.

The case study was part of the overall Physical Asset Management process carried out by Atom on behalf of its client. The team of specialists from Newtron Technologies – the technical arm of Atom Group – and the corresponding team from Novosound -specialising in industrial applications – worked together on this customised project, with very specific and particular requirements to meet the needs of this inspection case through non-destructive testing technologies.

THE PROBLEM

A critical defence asset that presents a significant challenge in terms of integrity and reliability design due to its varied geometry and inaccessible locations. It is often subject to corrosion, cracking, mechanical failure, design flaws or even misuse and must be continuously monitored and assessed. This is a necessary requirement that has not been met by existing inspection technologies.

THE SOLUTION

This obstacle was overcome by utilizing Novosound’s industry-leading tool, Kelpie, for critical point corrosion mapping, resulting in increased scanning speed and improved imaging. As part of the overall Physical Asset Management program undertaken by Atom Group on behalf of its client, the Newtron Technologies team collaborated with the dedicated industrial applications team at Novosound on this specific project to meet the client’s unique requirements and address its inspection needs using new non-destructive testing technologies.

“An original inspection solution that previously seemed impossible has been achieved through excellent collaboration with Novosound and Dave Hughes”

TEAMWORK

Our team understands that each physical element has its unique inspection requirements. The Novosound team pioneered the design and manufacture of ultrasonic sensors using an innovative thin-film technology that overcomes the limitations of traditional ultrasound. Together we have met a challenging inspection requirement.

Through such collaborations, we can implement the most effective technological solutions to manage inspections across a diverse range of assets. This project is just one of many that showcase the successful application of fully flexible inspection tools and marks the beginning of an exciting partnership between two companies committed to discovering new solutions.
